Jánošíkové diery or following the footsteps of the bandits
Jánošíkove diery offer a unique winter experience – their snow-covered trails, frozen waterfalls, and icicles create a stunning scenery. However, they are among the more challenging winter routes, mainly due to ice and snow on ladders and iron steps. Therefore, it is important to have proper equipment and check current conditions before the hike.
Recommendations for winter passage
Equipment: Sturdy hiking boots with good traction, crampons, and trekking poles are recommended – especially when crossing Dolné and Horné diery.
Safety: Check the weather and avalanche situation before the trip. Some sections can be extremely slippery, frozen, or temporarily impassable.
Routes:
Dolné diery: These are among the less demanding routes, but ladders and footbridges may still be covered with ice.
Horné diery: These are significantly more difficult – with longer ladders, chains, and iron steps. In winter, they require experience and caution.
What to expect: You will encounter a winter fairy-tale landscape full of ice formations, but also a demanding terrain that will test both your gear and fitness.
